I LOVE ONE-LINERS
Especially those on their way to becoming proverbs.One-liners are created by persons. Proverbs are the product of a culture, a tribe, a community.
I realize some one-liners are just throw-away lines trying to be funny. The best ones are more like Instant Coffee: …. When mixed with conversation in a congenial group they expand into treasured insights.
Some have a mood of pathos:
- Do not regret growing older, it is a privilege denied to many
Others make us chuckle:
- Whoever said diamonds are a girl’s best friend never owned a dog.
Some cause us to pause and think a while:
- Everyone entitled to their own opinion but NOT to their own facts.
- All empires have a shelf-life.
- Nothing is ever completely forgotten, anything can be fully forgiven.
What a shame we have so many prayers of confession, so few prayers of forgiving.
- Coincidence is when God chooses to remain anonymous.
A few challenge the way we think about church:
- There is no “authentic” Christianity; it’s, always changing.
- Churches will die of boredom long before they die of controversy
Some prompt self-examination:
- Don’t confuse your career with your life.
Jesus is famous for one-liners….. remember the beatitudes? Of course you do because one-liners are so memorable. His parables are filled with one-liners. Remember the one about the camel and the eye of a needle? Sure you do!
I collect one-liners. These are not even a tithe of what I’ve gathered. Do you have a favorite One-Liner? Would you, please, share one or two? Not the satirical ones, or cynical cheap shots trying to be funny at someone’s expense. I want the short gems that shout. Ones you’d consider sharing with a future grandchild.
